Ocean Temperature Rises in Florida
Florida
is facing record global ocean heating, with water temperatures in the mid-90s
threatening coral reefs and adding to already oppressive summer weather.
Forecasters warn of temperatures reaching 110 degrees with humidity by week's
end, and dust from Africa's Saharan desert is likely to harm air quality. The
heat dome that baked Texas and Mexico for much of the early summer has oozed
its way to Florida with sunshine, little to no cooling clouds or rain, but
humidity worsened by the hot oceans. Scientists worry about coral bleaching, as
heat stress accumulates early in the season, weakening coral and requiring
extended heat to kill it. Global projections give a 90% chance for major
bleaching on many reefs, including in the Pacific Islands along the Equator,
the eastern tropical Pacific in Panama, the Caribbean coast of Central America,
and Florida. Read
